This post appears to be about vaccines. We encourage you to read our helpful resources on the COVID-19 vaccines: [Vaccine FAQ Part I](https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/wiki/faq#wiki_where_can_i_find_information_about_the_mechanism_and_progress_of_vaccines.3F) [Vaccine FAQ Part II](https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/comments/mnitdo/vaccine_faq_variants_chronic_conditions_nsaids) [Vaccine appointment finder](https://www.reddit.com/r/Coronavirus/wiki/faq/vaccinefinder) *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. For context (from the article), 69% of Greeks are vaccinated. If vaccines didn't work, we'd expect only 31% of intubated patients to be unvaccinated.

Puddleswim

Is that 69% just adults because I'm seeing 59% for Greece as a whole.

Delicious-Tachyons

that's what i'm seeing too. Mind you kids with COVID tend to fare much better than adults for the most part, so if we disregard the 0-20 segment we might get a better picture.

Imnimo

If we account for the fact that seniors are at higher risk of hospitalization and intubation, and are also significantly more vaccinated than the population at large, we would probably expect an even lower fraction of intubated patients to be unvaccinated if they didn't work.

Zealousideal-Crow814

Great point.

gracecee

Yup. Simpsons Paradox.

Jofzar_

Fullly vaccinated (69%)

53WaysActually

Better a needle in the arm early than a tube down the throat later.

whocares7132

Also, even if the rare complications reported from vaccines are actually caused by vaccines and not just coincidence, it is mathematically more logical to risk those complications than to risk severe COVID.

Delicious-Tachyons

Man I took a trip through the VAERS data and you have to report it as a potential vaccine side effect if it happens within a certain amount of time as the vaccination. One report had an 84 year old man who died, but his primary symptom was "gunshot wound to the chest". When you aggregate this kind of junk bullshit you get a lot of 'vaccine injuries'. Also a self-reported magnetization of ones arm with the note that they were too scared to go to the doctor with this..

Per the [CDC](https://www.cdc.gov/vaccinesafety/ensuringsafety/monitoring/vaers/index.html), the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) is used to collect reports of adverse events after vaccination from the general public. This is primarily used to identify potential topics to further investigate with regards to vaccine reactions. However, because the event data in VAERS is often not verified and is often self-reported, it should not be assumed that the adverse events in VAERS are actually associated with or cause by the vaccines, nor is it possible to estimate the frequency of these adverse events from these data. *I am a bot, and this action was performed automatically. Cyberjohn36

What about complications from long covid.. those are far more deadly

whocares7132

I'm assuming that severe COVID is anything other than a mild or asymptomatic infection.

Cyberjohn36

Its just blood clots, diabetes and pneumonia from what I heard

ISuckAtRacingGames

In Belgium there were 55% vaccinated (but our vaccination among +65 is 92%). So a small group of unvaccinated manage to take 45% of the hospital beds for covid.
