DrStar

The AT&T communications building. It also has a small bunker. It is built to survive during a war and keep the government connected.

Zenketski

Well it's a good thing that's public knowledge, so if anyone ever attacks the mainland they know just to bomb the shit out of it.

captbadass26

Happened in Nashville last Christmas Day

Tyrant-Tyra

Sounds like something a terrorist would say😳

HiMentality333

At&t servers inside there, IIRC.

kjb76

Yes, it is some sort of data/communication center for one of the phone companies. I used to work across the street.

robotevil

Yep, it's a Telecom Central Office (or just telco switch): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_exchange There are other window-less buildings like it in Manhattan, for example: http://wikimapia.org/1940509/AT-T-Switching-Center

DiabeticDave1

I want to say it’s designed like this because it’s supposed to be able to withstand significant trauma. I heard nuclear explosion once, doesn’t seem right. But government contracts are involved for sure.

Korietsu

It's 100% for nuclear attacks. Most main trunk switches like this, are designed to be recoverable after a 20-30 MT blast. In fact, AT&T's mobile disaster recovery is pretty much the gold standard, they can stand up 2 TBit/Sec within 24 hours in X radius in a disaster, basically re-enabling cellular and internet communication if needed. https://about.att.com/newsroom/2020/att_disaster_recovery.html Easily one of the coolest things to see about modern telco infrastructure.

[deleted]

They can survive a nuclear attack but they can’t keep my wifi running under normal conditions

SupSeal

The sacrifices we make

Sploitspiller

You don’t want to be stuck in there while someone is ripping hot farts next to you.

ShittyCompiler

Probably one of the best places to be stuck, TBF. Keeping those server racks at a steady coolish temperature takes one hell of a cooling system, so a fart would disappear like into Sahara.

redditorium

SkylarAV

Yes yes I heard you all, nothing to see there. Just a regular Ole American human building for data communications and other human activities

Ya_Boi_Immortal

Nah definitely MIB headquarters

"Help you?" "This dude gave me this card, an--" "Elevator."

PeanutButterSalami

Man….that’s just one of those movies I would love to watch for the first time again. Or just again, tonight. Edit: now I need you to look into this pen….. J - “Why the big secret? People are smart. They can handle it.” K - “A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it. Fifteen hundred years ago everybody knew the Earth was the center of the universe. Five hundred years ago, everybody knew the Earth was flat, and fifteen minutes ago, you knew that humans were alone on this planet. Imagine what you'll know tomorrow.”

dodexahedron

That was one of the TV ads for one of the movies. Will Smith neuralizes you and says "see it again...for the first time."

[deleted]

If you are neuralized though you'd have no idea what "it" is that you're supposed to see right, he just wiped that?

The first 30 minutes of that movie is absolutely incredible. Obviously the whole movie is amazing, but the first 30 minutes are just so captivating.

JohnQP121

"Those weren't eyes, those were his gills" "Before he jumped he said your planet is gonna end. - Did he say when?" "Next time I will shoot you where it doesn't grow back!" "Did you ever flash that thing at me? - Never."

arcosapphire

> Did you ever flash that thing at me? Isn't it "did you ever flashy-thing me?"

Ice-Negative

I always thought the scene where they tested all the candidates was hilarious.

ZiggoCiP

I watched recently for the first time in a while. Hot damn what a great movie. It's one of those 'once in a while' movies that just slaps so hard each time you watch. 10/10

robbage24

My mom has the ability to watch movies, but retain little to nothing about what she watches. So she’ll watch something and be like oh I don’t remember that! I’m so jealous that she gets to basically rewatch movies for the first time.

vayaconeldiablo

I am so glad I am not alone. I can’t retain much of the movies I watch. Been a thing my whole life.

Cribsby_critter

I always wondered what he’d do if someone came in uninvited.

Marutar

Probably just tell them wrong building. If they got pushy or appeared to know more than they should, they probably got a big old mind wipe for good measure. "Yes sir, please step into the elevator and the suits will answer all of your questions about aliens" *elevator attendant proceeds to push the down button*

motions2u2wipemyass

I'm sure he can handle business. You don't just have one guy guarding the entrance to MIB unless he can handle business.

GivesNoForks

If he doesn’t get up when the entire HQ literally gets taken over, you can be sure you don’t want to see the scenario that they need him for.

7573

He was there and despite that, the entire HQ got taken over.

GivesNoForks

*hears fighting inside* “Naw, J and K got this.”

baker_221b

He's clearly an NPC. Minimal lines, and never moves from his general area

MuffinSlow

Not open the elevator? 😁

xxxxx420xxxxx

Nah they'd go in the elevator, they just wouldn't come out

Lemur001

And now the final test; an eye exam.

Just finished this game and it’s literally the inspiration. https://control.fandom.com/wiki/Oldest_House

TGX2189

Heard they are hiring a new janitor!

Holiday-Foundation-6

Cant Believe I had to scroll this far for a Control reference, its a perfect fit...

Brenchy

Her jaw alone carved the entire building

MJDeadass

Isn't it the NSA?

VelvetRevolver_

Both, the NSA is renting out a few floors IIRC.

redpandaeater

Yup gotta snoop on all of us.

jaretok

Why no windows tho? People don’t work inside?

fataldata

Telecom central offices and collocation facilities do not have windows generally. Maybe in the lobby or entrance but definitely not where the servers and cross connects are.

vomit-gold

The technology inside is pretty valuable, and the security is extremely, extremely tight, almost government levels. The building being windowless protects the telecom stuff from nuclear blast, terrorist threats, and weather disasters. Plus it helps temperature. The building also has super reinforced flooring and high ceilings because of the having severs and lines I believe. [This is my favorite article about it](https://theintercept.com/2016/11/16/the-nsas-spy-hub-in-new-york-hidden-in-plain-sight/) edit: Also google Titanporte

Embarrassed_Couple_6

Titanpointe technically

HEAT_IS_DIE

Why is it that shape if it’s protecting stuff from disasters? Why not a sterdy low building or even something underground?

PiraticalApplication

Because of the problems with building in a city with really expensive real estate. Study and low needs to have a larger footprint to have the same capacity, and when the land is worth billions per block that gets expensive fast. Underground could work, but there are utilities and subways and things down there already that you can’t break, and building under ground is more expensive than reinforcing above ground. Why is data center there instead of Jersey? Probably some combination of historical reasons and so the NYSE can have super low latency internet.

lateja

Yeah there was a really interesting book on the topic that i think was called The Anatomy Of A City. It's absolute insanity to imagine all of the gears that have to turn to make NYC run. And there is SO much shit underground that I think building anything substantial/meaningful there would be impossible.

DigbyCaesar

Like the BT Tower in London. First thing you do after a big bomb is try and get Comms back up. You want a sturdy tall building for that.

TheUltimateSalesman

So you think there's an outlet on the top? /s

psychicowl

Because they only use Apple inside

burgerbat

It's an AT&T server building at 33 Thomas Street in NYC. I've been all over this building. The lobby has huge 5+ in glass doors. There's like maybe 10 people in the entire building at one time. It's a ghost town. If you enjoy a quiet poop this is the place for you.

[deleted]

Yeah most telecom COs are ghost towns. I've worked in there before too. Pretty heavy security though. This building is known for being codenamed Titan point and supposedly a majority of US. Internet traffic is routed through this building for the NSA.

Pretzeloid

Here are some [decent pictures from the inside](https://theintercept.com/2016/11/19/nsa-33-thomas-street-att-new-york-photos-inside/)

Aah, the Oldest House.

fuk_ur_mum_m8

Fucking amazing game. *Take*... **CONTROL**

Ignorant_GenZ

I’m glad you said it first. I love getting lost in the maze.

driving_andflying

Watch out--I hear [the basement levels](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mkYr0azAyG0) are full of mold.

Corky_Butcher

Everything about that game really fucked with me. I've never experienced anything like it...

celesta73

Isn't it wonderful?

Corky_Butcher

I'd love to say yes, but it was so unnerving I threw in the towel after 4 or 5 hours and that was 2 years ago. I don't know what it did, but the atmosphere, the themes, even the fucking architecture had me feeling all kinds of fucked up. Bizarre experience that I've never mentioned to anyone until now.

sbear37

Yeah you're not supposed to be able to see this building.

CharonStix

We all got hired

Welp as long as I'm assigned to the cafeteria and not the panopticon I'm cool.

And those headphones were given to you by a strange janitor...

Make-Believe_Macabre

The directory on the map was a little confusing.

milesdizzy

Man, try playing that game after smoking an joint, it’ll confuse the hell out of you. There’s a part where the credits start glitching out and I thought my brain was melting lmao

msmstud

Floor plan is subject to unscheduled change.

soumya_af

And the basement has some strange tasty mold

msmstud

Funny to see all those unexplained warnings for so long prior to encountering it. “There’s a problem with people eating mold around here?? If you can’t find your office watch your step??”

jejcicodjntbyifid3

Strange, this isn't where it usually is

EfferenceCopy

What’s this from? I’m totally missing the reference:(

celesta73

Video game, Control. Very good game!

NextedUp

Incase people are interested in knowing more: * Action 3rd Person Shooter with RPG elements (level up equipment/abilities) * You go around investigating an incident that has disrupted operation of the "Federal Bureau of Control" (the HQ is called "the Oldest House"). Has a 1950s FBI aesthetic (tile, pneumatic tubes, and concrete brutalism - similar to Loki's TVA if you want a contemporary example of the style). * Your character has an interesting gun that morphs between semi/auto-pistol, rocket launcher, etc. * Your character gets access to telekinetic powers (shield, high jump/float yourself, pick up and launch objects/enemies at each other, and similar) * Much more "strange" paranormal (twisted/impossible geometry, parallel dimensions, objects with strange powers) than outright horror/scary * Has connections and a storyline related to the Alan Wake series

JohnnyPopcorn

Important point you forgot to mention is that the lore is _heavily_ inspired by the SCP Foundation

beefwich

And if anyone wants to get into the SCP Foundation and lacks the fortitude to aimlessly browse through thousands of entries of wildly-varying quality, I'd recommend the Volgun and the Exploring Series on YouTube. The Volgun directly reads select entries with full voice acting and everything. The Exploring Series offers more in-depth synopses with call backs and cross-references to other SCP entries. Both are amazing.

poopin_for_change

The lore practically is the SCP Foundation. Lol. That's the reason I got this game, and God damn am I glad I did.

AndyGHK

Yeah it’s like if the whole Foundation were within one infinitely big Site, in New York City. So cool.

AndyGHK

Also, you get a GRAVITY GUUUN! Lol that was the biggest draw for me was just getting to throw physics objects around like in Half-Life.

TacticalBadger82

They can do ANYTHING in there

LegendOfBobbyTables

Except look out of a window.

Antrikshy

Unless they have indoor windows to look out of rooms into other rooms/hallways.

No, nuclear proof is spot on, though they probably had taken into consideration EM leakage as well (think tempest -> [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempest\_(codename)](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempest_(codename)) . AT&T would go on to specify nuclear hardening for all their larger scale switching hubs, so this building wasn't unique that way. I've been inside this building as well as walked past it thousands of times in my life, and I've never really thought too much about it's windowless appearance because of it's function. To me, the appearance of 4 New York Plaza further downtown always seemed a lot more weird, intentionally designed with very little window space to resemble a punchcard. Too bad there were no 8 track buildings.

Thanks for the award and you're welcome! I think people tend to forget what kicked off the internet revolution - the concern of a nuclear attack and the need to create a decentralized form of information exchange/communication in the event of one. There’s a really really tall building near me with no windows on half of it, though the construction is not ominous. It’s an elevator testing site. Edit: typo

rmac1228

My first thought was that this is the building from Mr Robot

ADQZ

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/33_Thomas_Street

BubbaChanel

“Brutalist” style of architecture. Without any real knowledge of architecture, I would agree with the name.

mildcaseofdeath

IIRC "brut" means "raw" (as in "raw material") in French, and brutalist architecture showcases building materials by leaving them exposed or unfinished. A lot of people hate it, but well executed examples are pretty interesting. The interiors tend to have a lot of cool open spaces with integrated planters, elevation changes, inclined and declined walls etc... they look like you're inside some Alan Parsons Project cover art or something.

Me-Mongo

Wasn't this featured in *Mr. Robot*? He blew the building up to destroy financial records or something?

Mdcollinz
